Cave wins women’s title while Andreas Raelert places 2nd in men’s event, both in Giro Air Attack™ and triathlon Giro triathlon footwear.

Just more than a month after winning 70.3 Worlds, Leanda Cave has done the double, claiming the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI by passing runner-up Caroline Steffen with only three miles left in her race. In the men’s event, Andreas Raelert overcame a slow swim to take 2nd place for the second time in his career. Both triathletes wore the new Giro Air Attack™ and Giro triathlon footwear.

“Kona is unlike any other event in the world,” said Eric Richter, Giro Senior Brand Manager. “The atmosphere, the energy, and the extreme conditions combine to showcase incredible athletic achievements. The 112 mile bike leg in brutal heat and swirling winds pushed Leanda and Andreas to their limits, and Giro is proud to have provided them with equipment that gave them a competitive edge. Their choice of the Giro Air Attack™ and Giro triathlon footwear is testament to our dedication to seamlessly merging technology and design to enhance the ride.”

With a systematic approach to design and wind tunnel–tested performance, the Air Attack™ offers reduced aerodynamic drag, light weight and tremendous cooling power. Taken together, these factors can help riders to use their power more efficiently, creating what Giro calls “Free Speed”. The Air Attack™ will be available in two versions – including one with a magnetically-anchored optical shield, with MSRP of $200 USD and $240 USD respectively. The helmet will be available in Spring 2013.

The Mele™ Tri and Facet™ Tri footwear feature a microfiber and air-mesh upper tailored to support the foot comfortably and securely. Triathlon shoes-specific features like a wide throat opening with stout upper strap are combined with small details like an integrated scuff guard at the heel, and the looped heel pull with a smaller secondary loop for anchoring the shoe to the crank, ensuring that the shoe is ready for quick transition. Giro’s acclaimed SuperNatural Fit footbed with Aegis™ anti-microbial treatment feature adjustable arch support for superb comfort. A stiff Easton® EC70 composite outsole that maintains a low stack height for maximum efficiency with minimal weight. Mele™ Tri and Facet™ Tri are available for MSRP $199 USD.
