Riding is more than a race. Giro, the cycling world’s design leader since 1985, will launch the Giro New Road line Spring 2013, providing cyclists with a new choice in performance apparel. Reflecting the changing face of cycling, Giro New Road has been designed to match the freedom and exploration that today’s road riders are in search of. Giro New Road will be sold through select retailers in North America, Germany and Switzerland and beginning March 2013.

“Cycling is going through a period of rapid change, both as a sport and as a cultural movement,” said Greg Shapleigh, Giro Senior Vice President. “Bikes, and even cities, are matching this evolution, but cycling apparel hasn’t kept up. With Giro New Road, we have created a new kind of clothing line that recognizes that cycling is more than just a race.”

To lead the development of the apparel line and ensure that Giro New Road brought a fresh vision to performance apparel, Giro turned to designer Alex Valdeman, a third generation garment maker who created the underground label HomeRoom, as well as helping develop Commuter by Levi’s and working with Kanye West on his apparel line. Valdeman and the Giro team have anchored the Giro New Road line with the original performance material, merino wool, a fabric that is inherently breathable, elastic, and stylish. Giro New Road also employs select technical fabrics, treatments, and techniques like Nycor WoolTM, Pertex® Shield, and Skeletal Pocket ConstructionTM to give Valdeman’s fun and fashionable designs all the performance advantages cyclists demand.

While Giro New Road apparel can be appreciated as individual items, its true function is optimized when used as a system. Each layer is assigned a primary purpose, whether it be storage, temperature regulation, or protection from the elements. Each item meets Giro’s superior functionality criteria while delivering a clean aesthetic. Essential pieces, like the Bib Under Short, introduce innovative key features such as a working fly and rear storage pockets while signature items, like the 40M short and Merino SS Jersey, bring a level of performance to the line only Giro could deliver.
