Emerging leader in cycling footwear develops lightweight, premium performance cycling shoe designed with input from Taylor Phinney for 2012 Giro d’Italia and London Olympics
Giro, the cycling world’s design leader since 1985, has collaborated with Giro d’Italia Maglia Rosa-wearer and U.S. Olympic hopeful Taylor Phinney, to create the Empire™ shoe. Designed specifically for the Giro d’Italia, the Empire™ blends premium, high-performance materials and minimalist design with refined styling and a classic, laced closure. The Empire™ will be available in early 2013 in two colorways with a suggested retail price of $200 USD.
Taylor Phinney leads the next generation of great American cyclists. Currently competing for BMC Racing Team on the road, he is a two-time winner of U-23 Paris-Roubaix one-day race and former junior World Time Trial Champion. Phinney has also excelled on the track with multiple world and national jerseys as a junior, and an Elite World Championship in the Individual Pursuit. He will be targeting the individual time trial at the London Olympics if he earns a berth on the United States team.
“At Giro, we are always looking for ways to reinvent forms and performance for the rider,” said Eric Richter, Giro Senior Brand Manager. “The Empire™ was an opportunity to deliver a unique shoe for Taylor that would feature all of our footwear line’s performance advantages in a package that was not only sleekly aerodynamic – and therefore ideal for efforts like the Giro d’Italia prologue where every millisecond counts – but also set a new standard for style on the road. Having Taylor win the prologue and pull on the race leader’s maglia rosa was a thrilling validation of the concept for this special shoe, and we can only hope London will bring similar success.”
The Empire™ is built around Giro’s proven performance cycling last for outstanding fit comfort, and features the acclaimed SuperNatural Fit Kit footbed with custom adjustable arch support. The upper is made of a single-piece, perforated Teijin™ microfiber upper combined with a laced closure for the ultimate in light weight and fit, with an internal injection molded heel cup and retention liner to keep the foot stable and securely locked into the shoe. An Easton EC90™ unidirectional carbon fiber sole provides superior stiffness and light weight, with a minimal stack height of just 6.5mm. With a weight of just 200 grams in size 42, the Empire is among the lightest shoes available, with a style that is totally unique and performance that’s been proven at the highest level of cycling competition.
